VoLTE is a packet-based technology for 4G LTE networks for routing voice traffic and data transmission. It is a standard high-speed wireless communication service in smartphones, mobile computers (TCDs), and IoT devices. VoLTE provides improved call quality and the ability to use voice and data simultaneously.
VoLTE is based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem platform, which enables multimedia to be delivered as data streams using a common IP interface. VoLTE can use the legacy voice network, but it is not dependent on it.
For example, a user can initiate a call using the LTE network. If they move outside the LTE coverage area, the call will revert to the legacy network. Most 4G wireless networks use LTE technology and therefore support VoLTE.
