Stingray PCEF is a software solution responsible for applying quality of service (QoS) policies and charging in telecom operator networks. The module determines which services are provided to a subscriber and under what conditions, directly affecting the network’s ability to process requests without delays.
The changes affected request processing mechanisms and session management. The system core received a new architecture based on a finite state machine — with no mutual locking between processing threads and even load balancing across all processor cores. In addition, a new implementation of the Diameter protocol reduced message processing load and response time under high request intensity.
Growth in the subscriber base and mobile traffic volume requires operators not only to increase the performance of network functions, but also to make more efficient use of computing resources. We focused on modernizing the PCEF architecture so that operators can scale services without a proportional increase in server infrastructure and capital expenditure.
Stingray PCEF is part of the Stingray platform and is used to manage subscriber service policies in mobile and fixed communication networks. The solution is deployed on standard x86 servers, integrates with operators’ existing infrastructure, and supports scaling as load grows.
