ePDG Explained: Architecture, IMS Core Integration, and How to Choose a Vendor

An ePDG (Evolved Packet Data Gateway) is the gateway that lets a mobile operator accept subscriber traffic from untrusted Wi-Fi networks and bring it into the EPC through a secure IPsec tunnel. It authenticates the subscriber by SIM and connects the session to the packet core, through which it reaches the IMS core, which is what makes Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi) possible. This article covers how an ePDG is built, which interfaces it uses, how it fits with IMS, and what to check when choosing a vendor.

Implementation of ePDG from VAS Experts in MVNO Miatel

The collaboration between Miatel and VAS Experts has been ongoing for several years. As part of this partnership, the mobile operator Miatel already utilizes VAS Experts' solutions, including NAT, DPI, and LBS. In early 2025, Miatel became the first operator to commercially launch WiFi Calling based on VAS Experts’ ePDG.

Today, we decided to discuss the relevance of such service and key ways to set it up: from OTT and UMA to untrusted access to ePDG. We will also look at the prospects of the technology and the challenges faced by telecom operators offering the service of calls over the Internet.
